Swedish/Relaxation
Traditional massage using long, soothing strokes with either oil or lotion. Usually uses light to medium pressure affecting primarily the superficial muscles while promoting and stimulating the relaxation response.

Deep Tissue
This is a deeper, more focused work often concentrating on specific problem areas. Deep tissue does not necessarily mean very deep pressure - it is more a philosophy of addressing the deeper layers of soft tissue in the body.

Myofascial Release
Similar to deep tissue often involving slow deep stretches of problem areas while focusing on the fascia of the body.

Sports/Stretching
More active massage where the client may be involved in active and/or passive stretching of problem areas.

In reality, most massages combine elements of all of these styles (and more). Your practitioner will utilize their knowledge and experience to determine the appropriate techniques at different stages of the massage to affect the greatest outcome.

It is very important to note that massage should always be an enjoyable experience. This work does NOT have to hurt to be highly effective. The therapist will work with the client to determine the appropriate style and pressure that works best for them. Whenever someone receives massage, or any type of bodywork, their comfort should be the top priority. If you are uncomfortable with any aspect of the session: too hot/cold, too much/little pressure, too much talking, or techniques that don't feel good to you, please say something. A professional therapist will never be offended by your input and can use that information to customize each session for maxiumum benefit. Remember, this is your session and you should be satisfied with the complete experience.
